Winter in Alberta isn’t just cold—it’s serious.
Your furnace isn’t just another appliance; it’s the lifeline of your home comfort for nearly half the year. But choosing the right furnace isn’t always straightforward, whether you’re replacing an aging system or building new. Between technical specs, efficiency ratings, pricing, and different brands, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
That’s why we created this guide.
At Weiss-Johnson, we’ve spent over 45 years helping Albertans choose heating systems that balance comfort, cost, and long-term reliability. We install and service some of the best furnace brands in the industry—and we’re here to help you find a unit that fits your home and your budget.
What to Consider When Buying a Furnace
1. Fuel Type
Most Alberta homes run on natural gas, which is typically the most cost-effective and efficient option here. Electric furnaces are available but usually suited for smaller spaces or homes without gas lines.
2. Efficiency Rating (AFUE)
AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) tells you how much fuel becomes usable heat:
- 80% AFUE = standard efficiency
- 95%+ AFUE = high-efficiency (ideal for Alberta winters)
3. Stages of Heating
- Single-Stage: Basic on/off control (more affordable, less precise)
- Single-Stage: Basic on/off control (more affordable, less precise)
- Modulating/Variable-Speed: Best comfort, efficiency, and quiet operation
4. Blower Motor Type
- PSC Motors are standard, but less efficient.
- ECM or Variable-Speed Motors offer quieter performance and better airflow control—ideal for multi-level homes or families with allergy concerns.
5. Smart Features
Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats, self-diagnostics, and integration with home automation are common in higher-end models. Ask us what’s compatible!
